Moissanite is a gemstone made of silicon carbide. It was first discovered in 1893 in a meteorite crater and is extremely rare in nature, so the moissanite used in fine jewellery today is created in laboratories. It is prized for its brilliance and fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale it is made for everyday wear.

Side by side, moissanite looks very similar to diamond. It is almost as hard (9.25 against 10 on the Mohs scale) and shows even more fire, the rainbow flashes you see in the light. The difference is in the origin and the price: moissanite is made by people in a laboratory rather than mined, it costs a fraction of a diamond of the same size, and because no mining is needed for the stone, many people see it as the more ethical alternative.
